The Gray-bellied Cuckoo (Cacomantis passerinus) in hepatic morph — Identified by:
- Rich rufous-brown upperparts with dark barring
- Barred whitish underparts — the hepatic morph pattern
- Rufous crown
- Smaller and more compact than Plaintive Cuckoo
- The hepatic morph is actually the female plumage of this species, quite different from the grey-and-white male
A subtler distinction between the two species (Plaintive and Gray bellied) but an important one — the Gray-bellied Cuckoo is more of an Indian subcontinent endemic compared to the wider-ranging Plaintive!
