Ashy Prinia

The Ashy Prinia, also known as the Prinia socialis, is a small passerine bird that belongs to the family Cisticolidae. Found predominantly in South Asia, it is a common sight in a range of habitats, including shrublands, grasslands, and agricultural areas.

Identification

• Size: Approximately 12-14 cm in length.
• Color: The Ashy Prinia features a brownish-grey upper body, with lighter underparts. It has a characteristic long tail and a distinct white eye stripe.
• Voice: Its call is a series of sharp, high-pitched notes, often described as “chirruping.”

Habitat and Behavior

Ashy Prinias are often seen flitting about in low bushes and shrubs, searching for insects and other invertebrates as their primary food source. They tend to be quite active and can be observed in pairs or small groups.

Breeding

During the breeding season, the female builds a nest using grass and plant materials, usually located close to the ground in dense vegetation. The typical clutch consists of 3-5 eggs, which both parents may help care for.
