Sandpiper walking

Sandpiper

The sandpiper is a group of small to medium-sized shorebirds found in various habitats around the world, primarily near shorelines, marshes, and wetlands. These birds are recognized for their slender bodies, long legs, and pointed beaks, which they use to probe the mud and sand for invertebrates like worms, crustaceans, and insects.

Characteristics

  • Habitat: Commonly seen along beaches, mudflats, and estuaries.
  • Feeding: They often feed in flocks, using a technique called “run and peck,” where they quickly move along the shore, stopping to probe for food.
  • Migration: Many sandpiper species are migratory, traveling thousands of miles between their breeding and wintering grounds.
