River tern

The River Tern, scientifically known as Sterna aurantia, is a striking bird commonly found near freshwater bodies like rivers and lakes. Known for its elegant slender body and distinctive coloration, it typically features a bright yellow bill and a black cap on its head.

Habitat

River terns prefer open waters with plenty of fish, as they primarily feed on small fish by diving. They can be seen along the shores of rivers, coastal marshes, and reservoirs.

Behavior

These birds are known for their acrobatic flying skills, often spotted gliding gracefully over the water or engaging in unique aerial displays. They are also social creatures, often found in flocks.

Breeding

During the breeding season, River terns establish colonies on sandy banks and islets. Their nests are simple scrapes in the ground, where they lay a few eggs. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the young.
